About us

My name is Paul Johnson and I’m the Director of Health and Safety Worx Ltd. I’m Tauranga born and bred. I’m married and have a young son who attends Otumoetai Primary School.

In 1998 I returned from my OE having spent 8 years living in Tokyo, Japan, working as an English language instructor. From 1999 to 2007 I was employed as a stevedore at the Port of Tauranga. It was the nature of this work that ignited my interest in health and safety, due to the high risk nature of this activity.

Health & Safety from an employer and employee perspective

I became actively involved in H&S, joining H&S Committee and was appointed to the position of H&S Coordinator. I was also elected by the employees as a Union H&S representative. Therefore I have a balanced insight to H&S from both an employer and employee perspective. I enrolled in Massey University as an extramural student and completed a Graduate Diploma of Occupational Safety and Health (GradDipOSH) in 2008. I am also a member of the New Zealand Institution of Safety Management (NZISM)

One of the things I have noticed is the diverse attitudes to safety displayed by the different companies working in the same environment. These differences could be attributed to the level of management’s commitment – or lack of – to the concepts of good H&S practices.

Legislation dictates what is required to be done under the law. An OHSMS is the mechanism that ensures what is legally required by law, codes of practice and relevant standards are applied to an organisations operation. The safety culture of an organisation is the product of individual and group values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behaviour that determine the commitment to an organisations health and safety management.

Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS)

I’m committed to providing an OHSMS tailored to meet your organisations individual needs. I believe that there needs to be a holistic approach to OHS that requires both management and employees’ participation and founded on mutual trust. I can help you reach this level of involvement and guide you in the methods required to take control of your organisations future.

Skydiving and Safety

My other passion is skydiving. I did my first jump when I was a high school student in 1981. I’ve worked since 1998 as a professional skydiver, and have done in excess of 4000 jumps. I’m currently working as a tandem instructor at Tauranga Tandem Skydiving Ltd and am the Drop Zone Safety Officer (DZSO). This involves an active role in the H&S management as well as liaising with airport management and other airport users.

I believe that life is precious, worth living - and preserving. I understand that everything we do in life has an associated element of risk. These risks can be accessed and prioritised. Unacceptable risks can be mitigated and controlled in such a way that they become acceptable and can potentially have huge positive outcomes.
