About Health & Safety Worx Ltd, Tauranga
My name is Paul Johnson and I’m the Director of Health and Safety Worx Ltd. I’m Tauranga born and bred and have lived in this area all of my life – except for an 8 year stint living in Japan teaching English in the 90s.
Upon returning from my OE in 1998 I was employed as a stevedore at the Port of Tauranga. It was the nature of this work that ignited my interest in health and safety, due to the high level of risk involved with this activity. I became actively involved with H&S at the grass roots level, joining the H&S committee and becoming a H&S representative.
Health & Safety from an employer and employee perspective
In order to progress I enrolled in Massey University as an extramural student and completed a Graduate Diploma of Occupational Safety and Health (GradDipOSH) in 2008. I am a Graduate member of the New Zealand Institution of Safety Management (NZISM) and am a committee member of the local branch.
Since leaving the stevedoring company I have gained experience working in OHS in many areas including but not limited to;
- Oil facilities
- Geothermal electric power generation facilities
- Hydroelectric power station maintenance
- ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices (WSMP) at a Tertiary level
- ACC Workplace Safety Discount (WSD)
- Audits and prequalification’s with individual companies as well as prequalifying organisations such as Prequal – Impac & ISNetworld
Legislation dictates what is required to be done under the law. An Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS) is the mechanism that ensures what is legally required by law, codes of practice and relevant standards are applied to an organisations operation. The safety culture of an organisation is the product of individual and group values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behaviour that determine the commitment to an organisations health and safety management.
Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS)
I’m committed to providing an OHSMS tailored to meet your organisations individual needs. I believe that there needs to be a holistic approach to OHS that requires both management and employees’ participation and founded on mutual trust. I can help you reach this level of involvement and guide you in the methods required to take control of your organisations future.
Skydiving and Safety
My other passion is skydiving. I did my first jump when I was a high school student in 1981. I’ve worked since 1998 as a professional skydiver, and have done in excess of 6700 jumps. I’m currently working as a tandem instructor at Tauranga Tandem Skydiving Ltd and am the Drop Zone Safety Officer (DZSO), and hold 3 senior person positions in this Part 115 accredited organization. This involves an active role in the H&S management as well as well as other compliance based responsibilities.
I believe that life is precious, worth living – and preserving. I understand that everything we do in life has an associated element of risk. These risks can be accessed and prioritised. Unacceptable risks can be mitigated and controlled in such a way that the activity is acceptable and can potentially have huge positive outcomes.
